Zimbabwe President Robert Mugabe has spat venom at the United Nations (UN) for sidelining Africa in decision making roles.Speaking during the opening of the 26th summit of African Union (AU) in Addis Ababa in Ethiopia yesterday, Mugabe called a spade a spade in a nearly hour long speech. In his remarks, he asked the west and United States of America (USA) to stop meddling in African affairs.Mugabe speaking at the UN (file photo)The 91 year-old attacked UN in front of its General Secretary Ban Ki Moon. However, the South Korean was spared from the heat as he was singled out for good performance. The Zimbabwe leader called for Africa inclusion in UN Security Council, saying failure to do so will lead to exodus of all African nations from the organisation.He said Africa should have at least two permanent members in the Security Council which comprises USA, Britain, France, Russia and China.
“Tell them, tell them we are not ghosts, that we also belong to the world, part of the world called Africa, and Africans shall no longer tolerate a position of slavery, slavery by any other name, by denial of rights, by being treated in a manner we regard as not equal to the manner in which they treat themselves,” said Mugabe.The Zimbabwe leader was making his last speech as chairman of AU before surrendering his crown to Chad President, Idriss Deby. Other African leaders and diplomats could not help but cheer him as he was speaking.
Mugabe also faulted UN for having its headquarters in New York, United States of America. He said a greater portion of world population is in Asia and Africa which qualifies the two continents to be right places for headquarters. Then a standing ovation followed after uttering the last sentence on this matter.Mugabe is unpopular in the west for his 35 year rule. He maintains that he will rule Zimbabwe for as long as he lives because he still has energy. He has always stood firm against Western interference in Africa.
