However, lack of the final touch coupled with excellent goalkeeping from Swazi goalkeeper Simelane Lwethu denied them the much needed victory.

Wonder-boy Peter Banda was the architect of most of the junior Flames attacks but he too found Lwethu a hard nut to crack.

Malawi will travel to Swaziland for the return encounter in two weeks time. The winner of this two-legged tie will face Angola in the second round.

Malawi last contested in the Under-20 Africa Cup of Nations in 2013. The Junior Flames reached the finals of the competition in 1999.

National football team technical panel is keeping its fingers crossed over the availability of all 10 foreign-based players that have been called into camp ahead of the March 27 friendly against Uganda.
Most foreign-based players will be in action this weekend, and there are concerns that some might pick injuries that can rule them out of the friendly set for Kampala.

South Africa’s Bidvest Wits striker Gabadinho Mhango has already been ruled out after picking an injury.
Flames Coach, Ronny van Geneudgen, has called Robert Ng’ambi, Robin Ngalande, Limbikani Mzava, Gerald Phiri Junior, Frank Banda, John Banda, Chawanangwa Kawonga, Charles Swini, Dalitso Sailesi and Richard Mbulu.
The players ply their trade in South Africa, Mozambique, Zambia and Portugal.
Team Manager, James Sangala, said they were hoping that all the foreign-based players will be available for the match.

“We need to have a full squad so as to assess our progress on the philosophy of the head coach. Obviously, we are monitoring the professional players and it is our prayer that they should not get hurt during games set for this weekend. Such issues are tricky because their clubs also have something to say,” he said.
Van Geneudgen dropped Fletcher Bandawe, Mphatso Philemon and Char les Thom f rom his squad while Nyasa Big Bullets left-back Emmanuel Zoya picked a groin injury.
Malawi is expected to face Morocco in September in an away qualifier of the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations.

FMB Marketing Manager Widdey Nsona, who was accompanied by Regional Commercial Manager-South, Thenga Chipeta, announced the plans during a press briefing which the bank hosted at its headquarters in Blantyre in view of the league’s scooping of Best Executed Programme Award on Friday.
During the inaugural Malawi Sports Awards held in Lilongwe, Griffin Saenda Junior of Griffin Young Stars was named Coach of the Year while the team’s player, Peter Banda, was voted Sportsman of the Year. Malawi under-17 national football, which is dominated by players from the league, was also named Best National Team.
Nsona said they were not surprised that the league and its products dominated the awards.
“We are overwhelmed by the awards. It has been a wonderful journey for FMB; from [sponsoring] three districts to 12. Our vision is to be in every district as there is a lot of untapped talent. We are happy with the impact of the league on Malawi football. We increased sponsorship from K24 million to K30 million and we will continue to be committed. We are happy that out of 42 sports codes, we dominated the awards,” he said.
National Youth Football Association Chairperson, Chimango Munthali, said they were growing together with the bank in developing football.
“We have many leagues in the country but to have our player [Peter Banda] called up for the senior national team’s camp training speaks volumes of the quality of our league. Out of 18 players that won bronze at the Cosafa Under-17 Championship last year, 16 were from the FMB League,” he said.
Football Association of Malawi General Secretary, Alfred Gunda, said there was need to safeguard FMB’s sponsorship.
“Our goal is to ensure that the FMB brand is protected from the funny things that happen in football. Out of 42 registered sports codes under Malawi National Council of Sports, it is only us that have dominated [the awards]. We can only build on this strength to continuously go forward. Peter needs to stick to good behaviour and focus on the future. Let us encourage and promote such talent,” he said.

(FAM) president Walter Nyamilandu has said he will not stand for a fifth term when his current mandate ends next year.
The soccer governing body goes to polls next year.
“I shall not be a candidate,” Nyamilandu insisted.
“I will continue to exercise my functions as FAM president until that election,” he said.
Nyamilandu has also said he will not impose his successor or endorse a candidate.
Possible candidates circulating on social media platforms include first vice-president James Mwenda, executive members Daud Suleman, Daud Ntankhiko and Jabbar Alide.
Nyamilandu said affiliates are better-placed to pick his successor.

Mlenga Mvula has announced his candidacy for Mighty Be Forward Wanderers at the club executive committee elections at Lali-Lubani road later this month and is vying for the secretary general post.
Mvula said he has been persuaded by some sections of Wanderers supporters to contest.
“Yes, I can confirm that I have been approached by the team supporters that I should considering standing for a position at Wanderers,” he said.
“After taking a huge amount of thought and consultations, I can confirm that I will run,” Mvula
“Supporters have been approaching me to assist. As somebody who loves Wanderers, I cannot reject the trust of the supporters,” he added.
“Wanderers being the biggest team in Malawi, we would want to make the Nomads great again and I offer myself to serve the team diligently,” said Mvula.
His announcement comes after flamboyant fan Yona Malunga declared that he wants to run as Chairman.
Be Forward Wanderers are scheduled to go to the polls on March 25.
The elections were postponed last month in order for the Nomads to concentrate on the CAF Champions League campaign.
David Kanyenda, who once saved as Wanderers general secretary, is one of the aspirants to contest at the polls but could not disclose the position he is vying for.
Incumbent chairperson Gift Mkandawire and general secretary Mike Butao are yet to indicate if they will seek re-election.
But vice-general secretary Christopher Kananji has said he will not seek re-election, saying he wants to dedicate more time to his family.

Head Coach, Ronny van Geneugden (RVG), has named Patrick Mabedi as his new co-assistant Coach, following the dropping of Gerald Phiri Senior, the only setback being that the appointment is on a temporary basis.
Football Association of Malawi (Fam) President, Walter Nyamilandu, yesterday confirmed that RVG had opted for Mabedi, who is an assistant coach at South Africa’s Premier Soccer League giants Kaizer Chiefs, as deputy coach to join the Flames’ panel that has seen Peter Mponda and James Sangala retained as co-assistant Coach and Team Manager, respectively.
“The coaches have been recruited on a part-time basis; hence, they will be allowed to report for official duties with their clubs. Mponda is available until the end of the year when his position will be clear by December after contesting for primaries [for the position of Member of Parliament] in his constituency [Blantyre South].
“Mabedi will be available during Fifa calendar dates and during off-season. The Head Coach will, from time to time, call for services of coaches in the youth national teams, depending on the situation,” Nyamilandu said.
Mabedi Sunday confirmed that Nyamilandu contacted him over the possibility of returning to the Flames, having also served in similar capacity under Eddingtone Ng’onamo and caretaker trainer Nsanzurwimo Ramadhan.
“I, personally, have no problem serving my country. After all, I am where I am because of my country. But, at the same time, I told them to write my club [Chiefs], and if they agree to be releasing me, I have no problem. I am still contracted to Chiefs until 2019 and, as a professional, I need to follow protocol,” the former Flames captain said.
Previous third assistant coach, Deklerk Msakakuona, who, alongside Phiri, was imposed by Fam on the Belgian when he was hired last April, has been maintained as Malawi under-17 national football team mentor alongside Temwa Msuku and Enos Chatama as assistant coach and Team Manager, respectively.
Phiri, who fell out with RVG, has paved way for TN Stars’ mentor Meke Mwase as Malawi under-20 national football team coach in a coaching panel that now includes Silver Strikers’ mentor Lovemore Fazili and Griffin Saenda Junior as deputy coach and Team Manager, respectively.
The changing and chopping in the national team means that RVG might, at the end of his two-year contract, leave without one particular coach to hand over the mantle to.
Capital Radio seasoned sports journalist, Madalitso Phiri, Sunday welcomed the recall of Mabedi, saying with his vast international football experience, he can become a good coach for the Flames.
“I cautiously welcome the development. He [Mabedi] is a legend. If they can maintain him, the team stands to benefit. But what went wrong with Gerald and Deklerk? When they were coming in, we were made to believe that they were to understudy RVG. I would not be surprised if Patrick falls into bad books with the coach and is replaced again. We keep doing the very same things and hope for different results,” Phiri said.
Fam has hired and fired four coaches in the last three years, thereby undermining the progress of the team, which, later this year, will continue competing in the 2019 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers in a group that comprises Cameroon, Morocco and Comoros islands.

Flames, will play Uganda Cranes in an international friendly on March 24.
The match will be played during the FIFA international friendly window.
“We have agreed in principle with the Football
Association of Malawi (FAM) to have this match take place in Kampala as both teams need to keep busy and get the players active,” said Humphrey Mandu, the assistant Chief Executive Officer of the Federation of Uganda Football Associations (Fufa) .
Uganda Cranes, who have new French born coach Sebastien Desabre, has maintained top spot in the FIFA rankings for teams in the Council for East and Central African Football Associations (CECAFA) region last featured in the 2018 Total Africa Nations Championship (CHAN) in Morocco.

Wanderers’ Board of Trustees has announced that the club’s long-awaited Executive Committee elections—which can make or break the TNM Super League champions—are scheduled for March 25 in Blantyre.
Board Chairperson, Rashid Gaffar, Wednesday confirmed the development, adding: “We will soon issue a press statement outlining requirements for aspiring candidates.”
Wanderers General Secretary, Mike Butao, also confirmed the development.
“We will have our meeting to discuss the same and, after that we can comment on the elections,” Butao said when asked about his position on the elections.
Butao has since said they had a fruitful meeting with their sponsor, Be Forward Limited, of Japan over continued financial support. The current annual sponsorship is estimated at over K100 million.
“We had a teleconference [with Be Forward] for almost two hours. What is remaining is for documents [for terms of our new agreement] to be sent to them through DHL. The emphasis was on our annual budget and there is an assurance that it [the sponsorship] will go up,” Butao said.
There were fears on the sponsorship as Be Forward were unhappy with sit-ins that ensued in the build up to Wanderers’ participation in 2018 Caf Champions League preliminary round games against the Democratic Republic of Congo’s AS Vita.
Meanwhile, Wanderers Executive Committee member, Onani Chaponda, has said he would not seek a third-term of office.
“I have done my part. I think it is the right time to take a bow when we have ended our 11-year wait for the Super League title. I am making my announcement earlier so that my colleagues can plan as well as alert others who might wish to contest. I am paving the way for fresh ideas,” he said, adding that most members in the Executive Committee deserve re-election to ensure continuity.

Wanderers Team Manager, Steve Madeira, Tuesday confirmed Kanyenda’s resignation but said the club’s General Secretary, Mike Butao, was in a better position to comment on the matter.
“He still has a running contract with the club and, in his letter, he said he would not play for any club. He has just resigned,” Madeira said.


Reports suggest that Kanyenda has resigned because Kamwendo is accusing him of having a big say at Wanderers.
An audio clip circulating on the social media has captured Kamwendo addressing his fellow players about his frustrations over some new players who are having a big say at the club.
In the clip, Kamwendo says he will retire if Wanderers gives the captaincy to Kanyenda.
“Pali nkhani zambiri zomwe zikuchitika ku timu kuno…ma guys sitimauzana [There are so many issues that are happening in the team but we are not open to each other]. Timabisirana Chichewa and tikazilekelera ana akubwera ku timu ino adzavutika [We are not honest with each other and if this continues, up-and-coming players, who are joining the team, will suffer].

Kamwendo yesterday owned the clip but faulted the one who leaked the remarks he made while in the team’s bus.
The play-maker said he was merely fighting for players’ rights at the club.
“I played at Wanderers when Foster Namwera was captain. I played under Francis Mlimbika [as captain], so where is this issue of captaincy coming from? I don’t have grudges with Esau. In fact, we have been in the national team together.



“I will expose those who are bringing confusion in the club. I have observed that some people are jealousy of me because I was named Player of the Season in the just–ended season. At my age, some people do not expect me to be winning such accolades but I will keep on working hard. I will continue playing for Wanderers’ supporters and not individuals. I am sorry to the Nomads for the total mess at our club,” Kamwendo said.

The former Nyasa Big Bullets player limped off in the 25th minute while playing for Bidvest Wits at Athlone Stadium in Cape Town, where the hosts, Cape Town City, lost 2-1.

Gabadinho, who has endured a torrid time after being banned for a spitting offence a few months ago before being denied game-time at Wits, yesterday confirmed the injury.
“I had raced clear towards the goal and, when I thought I would score, the last defender for City fouled me,” said the striker who was Wits’ top scorer last season (with nine goals). He has scored two league goals this season.
Wits are eighth on the 16-member log table with 28 points from 22 games, lying two points ahead of Limbikani Mzava’s 11th placed Golden Arrows.
On Sunday, Mzava stepped forward to thump into the net the winner for Arrows as they defeated Ajax Cape Town 1-0 to ease relegation fears.
Mzava and Gabadinho are expected to feature in the Flames’ away friendly against Uganda’s Cranes on March 27.

Chairperson Ernest Molome, has threatened to report Kinnah Phiri to the world football governing body, Fifa, for allegedly absconding duty at the Gaborone team.
Molome said Phiri asked the team for an advance payment of his salary but the former Flames coach has not returned to the team.
“He asked for advance pay to buy an air ticket [so as] to see his family in Malawi. We gave him 15,000 Pula (about K1.1 million) but we were surprised that he did not return during the agreed time.
“When we called him, he could not answer and until now he just cuts off the line. We have reported him to international police so that he should not get a foreign job. We will also report him to Fifa,” Molome said.
Phiri, who last year signed a two-year contract with Chiefs, has been at loggerheads with the Botswana team.
Barely weeks after taking the post, he asked for termination of the contract after accusing the team of making false promises and breaching his contract.
But, recently, Phiri said he was returning to Botswana after his issues regarding the contract were cleared.
Molome said he was surprised that Phiri was behaving in such a way after ironing out his concerns.
“We gave him all he wanted. We gave him a four-bedroomed house and met his other demands. So, what else was he looking for? Molome said.
While referring us to his agent, Phiri, who is back at his Mzuzu City base, denied the allegations, saying Chiefs should just accept that they have failed to meet his demands.
“This team is broke. They don’t have money to even pay players. It is a team surviving on well-wishers. This team has had problems with previous hired coaches. I am a professional and I cannot do that kind of thing. These guys should just accept that the team is broke,” Phiri said.
Phiri’s Swaziland-based agent, Dingane Maduma, said Chiefs’ claims were a non-starter.
“What I know is that Chiefs paid for Kinnah’s air ticket to Malawi during the festive season on the agreement that he should return to Botswana early January [2018]. When it was time for Kinnah to return to Botswana, Chiefs sent him money for the air ticket but Kinnah insisted that the team should pay him advance salaries for two months as a security because the team was failing to pay him on time. But the team refused to send the money, saying they could not pay someone for the services not offered,” Maduma said.
He said he is trying to reason with Phiri to go back to Botswana to fulfil his contractual obligations.
“I am trying to convince him to go back to Botswana so that he should [see out] his contract but Kinnah is refusing, saying he has suffered a lot. That is what I know about the whole issue,” Maduma said.
A few months ago, Kinnah threatened to report Tanzanian side, Mbeya City Council, to Fifa for breach of contract after parting ways.
While still contracted as Flames coach six years ago, Kinnah courted controversy when South African team, Carara Kicks, now defunct, claimed that they had hired him as their coach. Kinnah denied this.

In a letter dated February 15 2018, addressed to Football Association of Malawi (Fam) General Secretary Alfred Gunda, Mbolembole said he resigned to concentrate on his post as Chairperson of the National Football Coaches Association (NFCA).
“Accept this as my formal notice of my intention to withdraw from the position of Women’s Football National Coach with immediate effect. The decision has been reached in consultation with the coaches’ body. While I believe I am leaving for very good reasons, I am also sad to leave the team.
“I want to thank Fam through you and the entire secretariat for the support you gave me during the 16 months I have been in charge of the team,” reads part of the letter.
When contacted Sunday, Gunda was reluctant to comment on the matter, saying he was yet to get information.
But Mbolembole confirmed having written Fam about his resignation.
“I was in a conflict of interest doubling as national team coach and chairperson of the coaches’ body because I was supposed to submit reports to Fam’s technical sub-committee, while also being a member of the committee at the same time.
“Secondly, I think I have done my part and it is time for me to give up-and-coming coaches a chance to take over from me,” Mbolembole said.
NFCA General Secretary, Davie Mpima confirmed receipt of Mbolembole’s resignation.
“Indeed, he communicated to us in writing that he wanted to concentrate on his post as chairperson of NFCA after weighing options,” Mpima said.
Mbolembole, who had Maggie Chombo and Andrew Chikhosi as his deputies, took charge of the she-Flames at the Cosafa Women’s Football Championship in Bulawayo, Zimbabwe, last year where they exited the competition in the group stages.
The team finished third in Group A with four points, having lost 6-3 to Zambia before beating Madagascar by a similar margin.
Malawi finished the tournament with a 3-3 draw against Zimbabwe in Bulawayo.

AS Vita, and Angola’s Atletico Petroleos de Launda are courting players of Masters Security FC and Be Forward Wanderers, but whether that translates to genuine romance is another issue.
Petroleos and Vita are yet to make their bids official, and the international transfer window will only open in July, thereby casting doubt on a transfer taking place now.
Vita Coach, Jean-Florent Ibenge, confirmed his interest in Wanderers players Joseph Kamwendo and Peter Wadabwa, after beating the Nomads 2-1 at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe on Wednesday in a Caf Champions League preliminary round second-leg match.
The Nomads bowed out of the continental competition 6-1 on aggregate over two legs.
Asked by MBC Television if he was interested in signing any player for Wanderers, Ibenge said: “Why not?”

However, Ibenge did not mention Manyozo who Vita officials courted after the first-leg, which Wanderers lost 4-0 in Kinshasa last week.
A few years ago, Kamwendo had a s t int with another Congolese side, TP Mazembe, but returned home, via Mozambique’s Liga Sporting Club, after struggling for game-time in Lubumbashi.

Masters General Secretary, Zachariah Nyirenda, Thursday confirmed that Petroleos President [Tomas Faria] approached the Lilongwe-based team after the first-leg, which they lost 5-0 in Luanda last week.
“The President did not come to Malawi for the return leg but the General Secretary did, and he also mentioned the same. There is interest from them and we are waiting for an official offer,” Nyirenda said.

Bullets Chief Executive Officer, Fleetwood Haiya, confirmed the shelving of the friendlies over the weekend, after Bullets beat Mangochi Select 3-1 and Nselema Select 5-0 at Ntaja Community Centre on Sunday and Monday, respectively.
Haiya said their ‘Taking players to supporters’ campaign’, which started a fortnight ago, has affected their plans for the international friendlies.

The government, through Malawi National Council of Sports (MNCS), introduced the annual national sports awards, dubbed Malawi Sports Awards, to recognise outstanding athletes, individuals and organisations.
MNCS Administration Manager, Henry Mereka, said the awards would be an annual event.
“Through the awards’ scheme, we will strive to achieve different objectives, including encouraging stakeholders to be part of the sporting community and inspire those who participate in sports to aim higher in their respective disciplines.
“Through this initiative, we hope to promote pride, hard work and sportsmanship among athletes, stakeholders and encourage the corporate world into sports sponsorship and partnerships,” Mereka said.
He added that three final nominees will be selected from each category of the awards.
“All the nominees and award winners will receive various items as decided, from time to time, by the awards’ ceremony organisers and programme sponsors,” he said.
Categories to be considered include Junior Female Sportsperson (under-17), Junior Male Sportsperson (under-17), Sports Administrator, Non-Citizen, National Team, Sports Woman, Sports Man, Sports Woman with a disability, Sportsman with a disability, Best Executed Sports Development Programme, Sports District of the year, Umpire/Referee/ Judge, Coach and Sportsperson of the Year.

Wanderers bow out of CAF Champions leg after they were defeated 1-2 to AS Vita of DRC in second leg of the preliminary round at Bingu National stadium in Area 48 Lilongwe on Wednesday.
AS Vita are through to the next round on 6-1 aggregate after they won their first game at home in Kinshasa 4-0.
The jam packed stadium were treated to a very entertaining encounter and Wanderers send false hopes to the home crowd in the opening minutes of the game before the visitors used their experience to punish them.
Vita went into lead in the 19th minute when Nakum Mundele planted Ounar Sidire’s pass eluding helpless Wanderers goalie, Richard Chipuwa.
Wanderers captain Joseph Kamwendo nearly pulled one back from a free on the edge of the penalty box but his effort hit the cross with Vita keeper, Nelson Lukong beaten.
Wanderers was on the receiving end with Sidire doing the solo runner on the right flank and their midfield was left wanting and this force stand in coach Bob Mpinganjira to rest out of form, Felix Zulu for veteran Essau Kanyenda three minutes to half time.
AS Vita returned to dressing room with a 1-0 lead which silenced the home crowd.
The second half saw Wanderers coming in with fresh ideas and started playing attacking football.
Three minutes into this half, Wanderers striker Peter Wadabwa levelled the scores after nodding home Precious Sambani’s cross from the left flank in the northern goal.
Vita made double substitution in 61st minute they brought in Baoyi Buyombe and Manbanzikila Gribreau for Muzungu Lukombe and Sidire respectively.
In the 74th minute, Vita’s Ngonda Muzinga’s curved free kick was parried for safety by Wanderers goal minder, Chipuwa.
Vita’s substitute Buyombe stretched the led to 2-1 in the 77th minute when he eluded advancing Wanderers keeper, Chipuwa after he was put through by Moloko Ducapec.
Wadabwa could have levelled the scores in the 81st minute when his grounder was well tamed by goalie, Lukong.

He said Wanderers played far much better at home as compared to the first game in DRC.
“We have learnt a lot by participating in the competition and hope next time we will have to get prepared well,” Mpingangira explained.
AS Vita Coach, Ibenge Florent admitted that the encounter was tough and Wanderers played well.

Kamuzu Barracks FC (KB), expect to name a new coach by the end of this month, the team’s Publicity Secretary, Prince Majiga, has confirmed.
KB do not have a head coach, following Super League of Malawi’s season-long ban on Billy Phambala.
Phambala was banned after being found guilty of misconduct during a game that ended in a 1-1 draw against Blue Eagles at Nankhaka Stadium in Lilongwe on August 2 2017.
Majiga said the transition of power from the previous Executive Committee to new office bearers has delayed the search for Phambala’s replacement.
“We are yet to meet and map the way forward. However, the issue of hiring another coach would be our first priority when we meet this week.
“On players, we have a deep squad but the decision to bring in new players would depend on the technical panel’s needs’ assessment. If they ascertain that new players should be roped in the squad, we will facilitate that process. Whatever the case, the team has enough depth to competitively and seriously challenge for honours this season,” he said.
The 2016 TNM Super League champions failed to defend the title in 2017 season after finishing on position eight on the log table. Be Forward Wanderers won the league championship.

Be Forward Wanderers face a mammoth task Wednesday afternoon when hosting the Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) giants, AS Vita, in the second-leg of Caf Champions League at Bingu National Stadium in Lilongwe.
With a battered reputation after a 4-0 loss in the DRC, Nomads head into the match as underdogs but anything can happen in football. Surely, the Nomads must forget the Kinshasa nightmare and focus on Wednesday’s match.
But they need to be brave and tactical against Vita; a side with vast experience in continental competitions.
Wanderers Team Manager, Steve Madeira, is upbeat of causing one of the biggest comebacks in continental competitions.
“Nothing is impossible. We need to have self-belief that we can score more goals and progress to the next round. We have to press them hard so that we should overturn the tables,” Madeira said.
Wanderers must avoid conceding early if they are to have hopes of turning the tables in this afternoon’s match.
After Monday training session at the match venue, Vita Head Coach, Jean-Florent Ibenge, said the Nomads have no chance of overturning the tables.
“I do not see them qualifying because we are in Malawi to finish the job we started in [the] DRC last week. We will make life difficult for them,” the former DRC coach said.
Wanderers need to up their game for them to beat the visitors who are dangerous in the wings.
In Wednesday’s encounter, Captain Joseph Kamwendo, Alfred Manyozo Junior, Peter Wadabwa, Esau Kanyenda and Yamikani Chester carry the Nomads hopes.
Wanderers have a full squad except defender Stanley Sanudi who was suspended for posting a video clip on social media.
Vita will rely on Jean Marck Masuku, Jesus Muloko and Mukoko Batezadio.
