A story of betrayal....
And concurrent activities surrounding the Chilembwe Uprising.
At Ntcheu the Uprising depended on Seventh Day Baptist whose most important leader was a Ngoni pastor Phillip Chinyama.
He had his own church at Nthinda's village near Dzunje mountain and close to Ngoni Chief Makwangwalas headquarters at Thyolera.
Nyasaland Govt reported on Chinyama's Seventh-day Baptists at loggerhead with the Catholics at Nzama.
Part of the hatred stemmed from close contact with Achirwas Watchtower [Jehovahs Witnesses] contact that proved disastrous for the rebels at the time of the rising.
C A Cardew a District Commissioner at Ntcheu not only founded Ntcheu Boma in 1902. Cardew had also spent some time in Tongaland Nkhatabay in 1909 during Eliot Kamwanas rise to fame.๐
By 22nd January 1915, the Ntcheu DC had got the wind of suspicious activities in the District.
He called the rhetoric Ngoni Watchtower leaders Siyasiya, Jordan Njirayaffa and David Shirt Chikakuda for questioning.
Early on Monday morning 25 January 1915, Chilembwe's runner, a Ngoni from Chiladzulu Richard Kukhale brought a coded message to Chinyama and the whole of Ntcheu that rising had broken out in the South.
Meanwhile another runner Yotam Bango had been dispatched with a letter to Tanganyika inviting the Germans to invade Nyasaland and assist the Natives. Bango eluded the Nyasaland security personnel at several points...Liwonde, Mzuzu and Kaporo in Karonga where he was nearly captured.๐๐๐
Bango's letter reached the Germans in March when Chilembwe was already dead and the Germans replied on 17 March 1915 with sympathy when they learnt Chilembwe was dead.
In Ntcheu Chinyama was already on the verge of arrest before the rising.
When the Ngonis heard that Chilembwe was going to lead an Uprising and that Chinyama's Church was to lead the rising in Ntcheu,,,,most Ngonis joined Chinyamas Church not as members but to participate in the rising.
Chinyama's congregation grew alarmingly and the Ngonis were speaking about the Uprising at drinking places when drunk despite calls from Chinyama to keep the issue secret.๐๐๐
The Ngonis had been angry with the Govt since the govt killed Chikuse Gomani.
