Zingwangwa Tragedy – Police Say Man Killed Wife and Son

Gruesome scene: Police and community members put bodies of the three in a van
The police in the Malawi commercial city of Blantyre have released the identities of three people who were found dead with gunshot wounds in a house in the township of Zingwangwa on Monday afternoon.
District Police Spokesperson Elizabeth Divala said the police suspect Charles Chipanda, 52, killed his wife Grace, 44, and stepson Gift before killing himself in the early hours of Monday.
She says a pistol and a suspected suicide note ‘signed’ both by the man and the woman was found near the bodies.
Divala says the police believe the woman was 'forced' to sign the note, alleging that she was cheating on her husband.
Meanwhile shock has engulfed the area as residents are trying to come to terms with the deaths of the two adults and the 13-year-old boy.
As of Monday night Zodiak was yet to independently verify the the motive behind the killings, but Divala said initial investigations point to a case of homicide influenced by marital disagreements.
Bodies of the three people were found by community members who broke into the house of the family after noticing that no one was coming out of the house since morning. Eyewitnesses said they heard suspected gunshots earlier in the morning.
The bodies of the three were taken to Queen Elizabeth Central Hospital for postmortem, said our reporter.
Divala said Chipanda was a businessman at a local market while his wife worked as a stores clerk at a church in the area.
She said investigations were still underway.
