Government issues stiff warning to chiefs
Nankhumwa: We need change.The Malawi Government through the Ministry of Local and Rural Development has advised chiefs in the country to avoid being involved in corrupt practises.Minister of Local Government and Urban Development Kondwani Nankhumwa made the remarks during the elevation ceremony of chief Kandulu of Mwanza from traditional authority to senior chief. Nankhumwa said chiefs are the custodians of the country’s culture therefore they should have good behaviour and should avoid corruption. He said this will help the country to develop.He also urged chiefs to treat people equally and not to discriminate against women and the elderly saying government will not tolerate such chiefs.Last week President Peter Mutharika also warned that he will deal with chiefs who grab land and beat up their subjects.
