A game underway in the tnm super league
Mzuzu, Northern Region Premier League side Kaporo Stars have suffered a blow after the owner and sole sponsor has withdrawn his sponsorship to the football club.
Speaking in a telephone interview with Malawi News Agency Tuesday, Alufeyo Chipanga Banda attributed his decision to withdraw sponsorship to alleged Northern Region Football Association (NRFA)’s tendency of shunning him from important sports activities.
He cited an example where sponsors of other teams were allegedly given formal invitations to a prize presentation ceremony for Simama League last Saturday but said he was not invited.
“I was expecting an invitation to the prize presentation for the Simama Football League as my team finished fourth in the just ended season but was surprised to learn all teams got phone calls for the event except me,” he said.
Banda said he interpreted this as unwillingness by the northern region based football association for him to participate in football in the region.
He said as a result he has also decided to put on hold plans to sponsor a K2 million worth of football bonanza for the northern region based sides.
However when contacted, General Secretary for the NRFA, Patel Kaunda, said the association followed all the procedures in inviting all the teams to the said prize presentation ceremony which took place Saturday (6th February, 2016).
“The invitations were sent through our Whatsapp forum in which all proprietors are affiliated. We are, therefore, certain that there was not a single person who was not communicated to,” said Kaunda.
Alufeyo Chipanga Banda has been sponsoring Kaporo Stars since 2011. With his withdrawal, it is not yet known who will take over sponsorship of the team.
