Workers steal millions from National Bank
Cashgate in Malawi is a deadly disease that is refusing to vanish as it has now seeped through different sectors of society. The private sector has not been left out as some employees of National Bank of Malawi (NBM) have become the latest to be caught after swindling their employer of millions of Kwacha. The bank workers who work at NBM’s Balaka branch are now in police custody after the bank sent auditors to the branch when NBM management realized that the branch was failing to sustain its services due to lack of funds. The auditors found that the employees had stolen K93 million from the branch, a discovery that led to the arrest of a manager and two tellers at the branch. The suspects are still at Balaka Police but officers refused to comment of the issue because of its sensitivity. However, rumours suggest the workers wanted to loot more than K100 million from the financial institution before setting the building ablaze to get rid of evidence.
